Every now and then C has the capacity to surprise me.
We had been waiting for the delivery of the LEGO Architecture Studio – the present he bought with the money he was given for his birthday. (And yes, he waited months until there was a sale so he could afford it – he’s good at waiting, actually.)
It arrived today.

We as a family have just finished watching the BBC documentary ‘The Men Who Made Us Spend‘. If you haven’t seen it, it’s definitely worth having a look at, as it documents many of the PR tricks of the trade that encourage or trick people into buying and spending.
This is something we have been aware of for a long time through reading consumer advocacy magazines like CHOICE or watching comedy shows like ‘The Checkout‘. For us, they were a great ways to raise our awareness of the psychological enticements and tricks used by almost all businesses.
And that got me to thinking about the ways I have trained my brain to try and reduce the influence of these techniques. This is something that was taught to me by my mum, and it is knowledge that I try as much as possible to pass on to my children.

After Sceleratus Classical Academy‘s lovely post on Architecture curriculum from her post on Architecture School, C found himself fascinated with animal homes. First we discussed making insect homes (we’ve done this before with an old milk carton), and then we stumbled upon Terrariums. This lovely post was the original inspiration, and I’d read about them in the wonderfully geeky “World of Geek Craft” book on Star Wars Terrariums.
C decided we needed to build one of these. But there seemed to be a lot of stuff we needed from nursery supply stores – not really an option for instant gardening. So we improvised.
